The Larry King Show

Besides his CNN interview program for TV, King also did a five hour interview show for Mutual Radio each weeknight from midnight to 5 a.m. The show was not advertised in newspapers on any kind of regular basis. In fact, it is from short articles that we know the most about the show. The first comes from the Doylestown Intelligencer, Doylestown, PA, and was published May 14, 1985.

The second is from the Syracuse Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY, September 17, 1985, and tells of the show being sold to Mutual.

The third article gives you an idea of how popular the King show was. It is from the March 9, 1986, edition of The Daily Herald, Chicago, IL.

Stewart appeared on the program just after MCA had released five films – The Glenn Miller Story, Rare Breed, The Bend of the River, Thunder Bay and Winchester ’73 – on videocassette. The release date was April 6, 1986. Jimmy would have appeared on the program very near this date. The original show doesn’t appear to be available, but a re-broadcast on The Best of Larry King is.

King begins by talking to Jimmy about his degree in architecture, the release of the home videos, the Glenn Miller soundtrack, Frank Capra and Alfred Hitchcock. At this point, King begins to take phone calls from listeners, each of whom has a question for Jimmy. The questions and the answers are very interesting. The interview lasts just over 41 minutes and will be presented here in two parts.

About 8 minutes edited from this program also appears on The Best of the Larry King Show, Volume 2 cassette. This will be covered in a separate blog in the future.
